Where ARE the Wild Things?

Last Friday, I went to see Where the Wild Things Are and I was overwhelmed with the symbolic gestures of the entire film. Inspired by a short children's book it morphed itself into a novel full of motion and emotion for that matter.

A story of a young boy named Max who runs away from home after much time of being misunderstood. Taking off in a boat he reaches a far and distant place. There he first hears these unknown and mysterious creatures and soon realizes that his life could be in danger. Quickly he declares himself as King with 'special powers' that prevents the 'wild things' to eat him. From there as King, he creates a whole new world alongisde these creatures. Together amongst adventure and howling: they discover through struggles, trials and tests who they really are.

It was raw. Very clear shots of anger, distraught, confusion, hollowness, but most importantly... a glimpse of h---. No I'm actually not referring to the place hell, but HOPE.

It as if hope is either just a fad or some far off fantasy that doesn't or can't exist nowadays. I think the beauty of this film was that it showed the viewer how our minds and hearts react; and how at first there seems to be no clear resolution. But then comes acceptance... and somehow we learn to find our way amidst all pain.

Ha! Here I was looking for the tag line and guess what I found!
"There's one in all of us.
Inside all of us is ... hope.
Inside all of us is ... fear.
Inside all of us is ... adventure.
Inside all of us is a wild thing."

My recommendation is check out this film: although it is rated PG, and the filmmaker's awareness of being kid-friendly, still be aware of its approach in showing these emotions that I mentioned in relation to yours or other children.

This movie had my mind working the entire time I watched and could have countless of interpretations. But what is yours? Where ARE the Wild Things? Do you believe that inside you there is a wild thing?

Let me know what you're wondering! G'night everyone!

  1. Megan,

I love this book. Being an only child, I would often use my vivid imagination to conjure up lands of adventure, suspense, and, at times, delve into the realm of my inner fears. This was a secure location where I could explore who I was. Though I have not seen the movie, I can recall the book and appreciate your well written review of it. Once I return to the States, I will be sure to rent it.

As always, I love you and your family. I miss you all so much and look forward to the day when we can be reunited whether on this side of heaven or in Glory with our Saviour. Take care.

P.S. You have turned out to be a beautiful young lady both on the outside and, more importantly, on the inside. Stay strong in the Lord and keep fighting the good fight in being a godly woman.
